Although my memories are hazy, Dream Con was very real! This year was the first time that Alt Darling was lucky enough to attend Dream Con. And what a historic year to be our first!

Dream Convention is one of theย largest Black-owned gaming, anime and pop culture conventions in the country. Attendants can meet their favorite creators, bask in community, and . Dream Con was founded in 2018 by RDC World, an online creative collective. Although it is one of the younger conventions, Dream Con has already lived up to its purpose and become a home for Black individuals in fandom. You can hear and feel the anticipation for the event year-round! Many can be quoted as feeling as though Dream Con is “a big family reunion.”
Dress, Play, Learn!
The schedule for Dream Convention was packed! Beyond typical discussion and cosplay meetups, attendees had opportunities to show off their talent, play their favorite games and experience unreleased ones, and upgrade their swag with the tattoo activation or by shopping with one of the many anime and pop culture themed brands vending! Characters and idols finally recieved justice during anime, video game, and Kpop court or elect an anime president. Attendees could find community and peace with various hobby meetups and meditation hours.
Not only is Dream Con a place for fun and fandom, but it is a place for advancement as well!

The main attraction for most attendees is the cosplay, camaraderie, and the content opportunities, Dream Con is so much more! Throughout the weekend, various panels covering different media and creative careers were scheduled such as “Voice Acting: Bringing CHaracters To Life”, “Teaching, Traveling, & Thriving Abroad While Black”, and ‘What’s A Lane? crafting Your Global Professional Destiny”. Industry professionals gave advice of how to break into and succeed in highly sought after areas. There were several contests, such as the Music Star Search, that gave creators opportunities. The Dream Stage Music Star Search was a music competition where the victor received the honor of opening for artist PARTYNEXTDOOR for Touch Grass Music Festival. (Winner @zayofthezoo pictured below.) Additionally, was the Into The Fashionverse runway competition where the prize was $1,000. (Winner @roboslicer pictured below.)
Dream Con is for everyone!
While Dream Con is widely known as a Black convention, people from all around the world could be found in attendance! It’s no secret that various celebrities and artists aside from official talent have been known to attend Dream Con. However, with the high attendance and rush to make it in time to the next panel, you would hardly have noticed any. This year, Dream Con had a record number of 45,000 tickets sold! In fact, on just about any platform, you’ll see exclamations of how someone can’t believe they missed this or that person! I know I personally missed all of them. Spotted were Bryson Tiller, Dominique Perry, and Sauce Walka among many others.
This year marked Dream Con’s biggest! But is that enough?

2026 had a record number of 45k attendees, 58 partenerships, and 9 non-profits participating! Dream Con received official proclamations from the city of Houston, The U.S. House of Representatives, and received recognition from the mayor’s office for their contributions to Houston. However, rumors have been circulating that the home of the convention could be changing. As the convention gets bigger, more funding and support is needed. More than the state of Texas may be able to provide.
โWeโre still figuring out whatโs next. Houston has given us so much this year, and thereโs a real chance we stay right here. Weโre keeping the conversation open and will have dates for 2027 soon,โ said Newton, Dream Con co-founder. โWe are just now deepening our relationship with Houston. In the past, I think weโve been so used to kind of just leaving every other year that this is the first time we have been able to work towards really deepening partnerships and connections.โ

Texas is not only the original home of the convention and its founders, it is a hub of Black and creative culture. Many fear that by moving Dream Con to another state, the convention would lose its original meaning, audience, and culture. It would no longer feel like home. Here’s hoping that Dream Con gets the support it deserves and needs!
