Dallas based band Rotten Cotton Candy has recently gone viral. For the wrong reasons.

On April 15th, DFW band Rotten Cotton Candy posted a casting call for an upcoming music video, a move many bands before them have done. The problem? This casting call featured slurs, a “stereotype” dress code, and a questionable plot. The video would have followed an “underaged girl”, her time in jail, and the people she would have interacted with.

Whether the aim was to go viral using shock value or if they genuinely thought this was the correct way to portray their message isn’t clear. But what is, is that it’s unwelcome in our scene with many instantly rebuking the band and the mv’s “theme”.

They need to disband imo

…I’m having a hard time understanding where the band thought this post was okay to make in any sense…I’m not sure if it’s a bad attempt to show support for their group but this whole situation is poorly being handled by them and that I can not deny.

Ewwww. Is tis their idea of punk? Cause it is just giving “loser”.

Their Response

The band removed the posts and issued an apology, which was removed at the request of their label, and replaced with a more detailed one.

In addition to being questionable wording in the post, the lead singer’s response on her personal page speaks for itself.

There is also the issue of individuals in the scene reporting that this behavior is common for some band members.

That band always has some drama, I’ve noticed. I just keep my distance from them.

While it is admirable how this was shut down, it’s sad to see it break container, having become a viral topic in the alt community on several social platforms, and seeing many say that this is expected of the DFW alternative scene. One can only hope that one day the world will see that the ignorance of few is not a reflection of all of us in the Dallas. I hope Rotten Cotton Candy is able to take genuine accountability for their words and past actions and show our community that change. Both for the sake of the band’s future and for the sake of the people around them.

Their label, Rock Sun Records released a response and opened themselves up to discussions in good faith regarding this incident and the band’s future with the label.
