We’re making some changes this year, and for once, it’s not just all talk! The theme of 2023 is indulging yourself. With that being said, if you’ve ever had the urge to change something about your appearance, have admired a certain still for a while, or whether you’re just feeling impulsive, now’s the time to move! One thing we want to see, are more people getting more creative with their hair. Here’s our list of styles we want to see more of in the BIPOC alt scene this year:

Printed Hair
We’re starting off with the most bold suggestion we have! Anyone that has dyed a print into their hair has our respect. The commitment you have to have to the style isn’t like the commitment you have to have for any other style in our opinion. The cut, the color, and the print all have to be taken into consideration. Even if you use semi-permanent dye, your hair will be like that for a while. Don’t have the guts, but want the look? Try it out on a cheap wig or you can attempt to use color wax!

Wolf Cut/Mullet
We don’t have much to say about this one. We simply haven’t seen this style on BIPOC enough! 🤷🏾♀️ Understandably so. Cutting your hair is scary. Once again, you can always test the cut out on a cheap wig first! And remember, although it might take some time, hair will grow back!

Unique Braids
Split color, all black, and all one color; they’re all safe choices at this point. Adding a third, transition color to your braids is a cute and simply way to change things up. This works with all styles! Not just box braids. Even if you add braids to your hair to frame your face or throughout your hairstyle, this could work. There has also been an influx of cool, new styles being created. Such as the chain braids on a wig created by Alfred Lewis III or a few of the styles Baby Storme has been wearing.

Puffs/Pigtails
The most simple on the list and definitely not the most unique. However, this style is quick, adorable, and easy to customize. Add some braids or chain braids to frame your face, some charms or color in the ponytails or braids, some chains connecting the ponytails. There’s so many ways you can change up this style! The hate this style gets for being childish is unwarranted in our opinion. We couldn’t wear them often as children because pigtails are sexualized and now we’re too old to wear them? We think not! Growing up, we couldn’t wait until we could look like Midori from Guitar Hero or all of the other people wearing this style!

Basically, we want to see more individuality in your hair this year! Everyone focuses on clothes and accessories, but the hair make the outfit too!
